Intro to Modern:

This class introduces students to the conceptual and practical building blocks of modern dance. Explorations of time, space, and energy focus on using breath and organic movement. Students will become familiar with the spine as an origin point of movement, use of the floor, dancing in parallel and turned out, concepts of grounded-ness and suspension, and using their own creative process to create dance.

Conditioning:
Dancers will be guided through exercises specifically designed to support their dancing through strengthening and stretching muscles, working intentionally on alignment and releasing unhelpful movement habits, and increasing cardiovascular capacity. Students should bring clean sneakers, socks, and be prepared to work barefoot. A notebook will be provided for each dancer.

Explorations of Ballet:
Dancers will have the opportunity to work in-depth on fundamentals such as balance, alignment, jumps, and turns as well as explore new topics in ballet. These include floor work, partnering, floor barre, repertory/corps de ballet work, and ballet history.

Wednesday Workshop & Master Class Series:
June 28, 2023 - "The Triple Threat" with Kate Lemos Brown
The phrase "Triple Threat" is a musical theater term where the actor is equally as talented in singing, dancing and acting. We've got the dancing part covered! But what happens when you add singing and acting in the mix? In this workshop, Kate will take our dancers through learning an excerpt from an age-appropriate Broadway hit musical song and the context of the song inside of the story. We'll explore who the characters are and develop our very own. Then we'll learn the dance and put it all together, just like a triple threat!

July 12, 2023 - Ballet with Felipe Panamá
This ballet class focuses on expanding artistry through coordination and musicality. Students are guided through barre, centre and allegro using movements that involve the entire body in synchrony with breath and precise muscular activation. The class encourages risk-taking by engaging dancers to analyze their own body in relation to momentum.

July 18, 2023 - "All that’s Jazz: Tradition and Innovation" with Michele Ikle
In this movement workshop, participants will learn about and embody the “jazzisms” found in jazz dance and jazz-influenced dance forms. Movement material will encompass a diverse range of jazz styles from jazz’s social beginnings to theatrical and contemporary forms and will be experienced through a somatic pedagogy. This means starting where you are and building capacity along the way. Polyrhythms, improvisation, weight sensing, expressive use of the torso, individuality within community, and tools for accessing increased stylistic versatility and performative “coolness” will be practiced as vital components of jazz performance. All jazz lovers are welcome!

July 26, 2023 - Ballet Variations with Karen Menter

August 2, 2023 - Precision Jazz Technique with "Rockette" Allison Bollinger
The class will be a Precision Jazz dance class, focused on technique and attention to detail. Class will include a short warm up and a combination. Dancers can wear jazz shoes or character heels if they have them.

August 9, 2023 - Jazz with Felipe Panamá
Dancers are guided though a highly technical warm-up that that is progressive in speed. Movements prepare students for the athleticism of jazz dancing by pushing their strength and stability while developing the use of dynamics. Across the floor combinations include moments of guided improvisation and technical sequences.  Class finishes with choreography that focuses on cultivating individual performance quality.
